André Piguet’s multi-disciplinary practice is driven by material experimentation, exploring the intrinsic potential and limitations of diverse substances. For Piguet, the act of making is a physical engagement that creates a site for a deeper, ongoing conversation with the material. This approach does not impose a specific concept or image; instead, the substance itself guides the direction of the work, often leading to unexpected and surprising outcomes.

His work evokes elements from the natural world, yet resists literal representation; instead, focusing on the dynamic exploration of form, texture and atmosphere. His process builds upon the tension of form and ambiguity, aiming to create works that feel both familiar and yet mysterious – even to him. The result is an autonomous and ethereal body of work that expresses the essence of material-driven experimentation. This encourages both the artist and audiences alike to engage with the visual cues presented by the work, decentralising authority and generating its own associations, free from the confines of fixed interpretation.

Piguet has exhibited consistently over the past decade in Australia, and has also exhibited in New Zealand, Italy, Brussels, France and the United Kingdom. He was a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist 2017–19 and was awarded the Stonehouse-Glasshouse Residency in France in 2018. Piguet’s first significant artist book: Weather Patterns: Drawings 2014-2021 was published in 2022.
