Featuring a suite of new large-scale, atmospheric paintings, Selected Ambient Works Vol. 3 marks the final iteration in André Piguet's trilogy series, following on from his shows at STATION (2016) and West Space (2014).

Taking its title from the seminal album by techno-ambient musician Aphex Twin, the exhibition points to music as an enduring influence on Piguet’s practice, both formally and conceptually. Similarly to musical composition, his idiosyncratic paintings elicit a transformative space by colliding harmonious and discordant elements together to create a pervading tension between the energetic and meditative.

In his paintings, Piguet combines traditional materials with a self-devised technique that he refers to as ‘stoking the image’. Oil paints are applied to Belgian linen and worked on by the artist in a swift and repetitive fashion, until the material has dried sufficiently to retain a matrix of contours. To build the desired textures and layers, the artist employs a continuous and intuitive movement to the canvas, focusing meticulously on its surface mid-transition, while responding to the medium’s viscosity. What arises is a quixotic body of work that conjures the tonal and gestural arias of Piguet’s visual soundtrack.
