ORSON HEIDRICH
Mechanical Advantage
7 October – 5 November 2022

STATION | SYDNEY

Mechanical Advantage is an exhibition of new sculptural and wall-based works by Orson Heidrich that explores the relationship between artist and industry.

Heidrich is interested in the creation of value through cultural systems that distinguish artistic commodity from a working object. Positioning himself as a 'complex manufacturer' acting as interface between industrial and art worlds, Heidrich collaborates with and outsources to an interdependent network of industrial manufacturers in the creation of his works.

Heidrich’s work sits within the field of expanded photography, sculpture and installation. The starting point for this body of work is a series of photographs taken by the artist, which are then manipulated and translated into three-dimensional forms through cyclical processes of digital and physical extrusion. The resulting objects morph between being finite aesthetic artworks – reliefs, sculptures, wall-hangings – and functional tools used in the ongoing creation of work – moulds, press plates and cast models. The works in the exhibition prompt us to consider a flow of production, reproduction, value and authorship, that coalesces around the aesthetics and practices of outsourced fabrication in a globalised world.

Mechanical Advantage is Orson Heidrich's exhibition facilitated by Art Incubator as part of their program supporting emerging Australian artists.
