The Ashtray Reader showcases a selection of recent works from acclaimed Sydney-based artist David Griggs. Within this new body of work, Griggs conflates political motifs and pop-culture imagery with elements of the grotesque and salacious; reclining extra-terrestrial nudes are displayed alongside striking portraits depicting Donald Trump and traditional still lives besides deformed bodies with bulging rolls of fat and obscured faces. Yet the bold and often confronting iconography that Griggs’ presents us with is always laced with a sharp-witted sense of humour and technical finesse. The publication contextualises this collection of works with words by the artist, his mother and contributors Shaw Hayden and TV Moore.
