TONY SCHWENSEN
Flatpack Vesperbild
6 August – 31 August 2022

STATION | MELBOURNE

Inspired by the depiction of sorrow and loss within Christianity, Tony Schwensen reflects on the popular devotional subject of the Virgin Mary cradling her dead son. Through Schwensen’s examination of history, materiality and memory, Flatpack Vesperbild contrasts the power and poignancy of religious sculpture with current themes of consumerism and DIY culture. With all details and distinguishing features smoothened, softened, and worn away, all that remains of Schwensen’s sculptural vesperbilds are memories of what once was. Flatpack Vesperbild engages and investigates notions of recreating and interpreting a form through imagination and influence.
