Pleasure Plants is a group exhibition delving into botany and eroticism, exploring the symbiotic and mutually beneficial relationship between humans and plants, and contemplating the pleasures derived from an openness to other species.
Pleasure Plants takes as its inception the ideas expressed in the podcast on general ecology from the Serpentine Galleries, titled plantsex. Here, Emanuele Coccia speaks of the life of plants and their reliance upon the intermingling of differing species of the animal and plant kingdom to reproduce, through a type of ‘orgastic cosmic appointment’. Pursuing this paradigm, the artists in the exhibition will both negotiate and illuminate the complexities of reciprocity in these mutalistic relationships, both within its original scientific context and in more abstracted and evocative forms.
