NADIA ODLUM
Temporary Frictions
9 October – 7 November 2020

STATION | SYDNEY

Temporary Frictions continues Nadia Odlum’s interest in the aesthetics of urban space, examining the structures that control our movement: the friction between the moveable body and immoveable environments. Central to her practice is an investigation of our perceptual insights and how these can be activated to facilitate different, yet shared, experiences.

Materially, the works are created using offcuts of metal, acrylic and vinyl that the artist sources from sign-makers and industrial manufacturers. Formally, she references temporary barricades, barriers and hazard signage used in the urban environment. These structures have been handmade (imperfectly) by the artist, creating loving replicas of ubiquitous objects. Through the combination of surfaces that are both reflective and transparent, the works give a sense of fragility and precariousness.

Odlum’s site-specific installation asks the viewer to navigate the space, experiencing the immediacy and activation of light and reflection, creating both rhythm and friction. Playing with perception, orientation and movement, Temporary Frictions responds to the current and somewhat charged experience of the body in public space.

Temporary Frictions is Nadia Odlum's exhibition facilitated by Art Incubator as part of their program supporting emerging Australian artists.
