NADIA HERNÁNDEZ
Nuestro Consuelo, Mi Consuelo
29 July – 19 August 2023

STATION | SYDNEY

STATION is delighted to present our second solo exhibition with Nadia Hernández, Nuestro Consuelo, Mi Consuelo, which will launch our new gallery in Sydney.

Hernández’s practice negotiates complex narratives, weaving together the political and the personal to create colourful and dynamic installations that speak to the contemporary diasporic experience. Well-known and celebrated for her textiles and collage works, this exhibition marks a significant turning point for the artist. For the first time, Hernández will present an exhibition made up entirely of large-scale paintings, showcasing her proficiency and distinctiveness as a painter.

The exhibition title translates to ‘our consolation, my consolation’, a reflection on the way Hernández finds comfort in connecting to her home Venezuela through fragments of images, stories, rituals, photographs, conversations and memories.

The works draw inspiration from disparate references, including Venezuelan artist Armando Reverón, one of the most important Latin American artists of the 20th century; The Latin American Photobook, an archive of Latin American photography from 1920s to early 21st century; Flemish painter Jan van Kessel, whose work she saw in a museum with her family; ancient history and mythology; current news and events; cartoons such as Snoopy, Tweety and Sylvester, which she grew up watching; and protest signs and advertising from the streets of Venezuela. Hernández poetically navigates the complexities of memory, despair, hope and reconciliation, reminding us that these opposing sensations often co-exist.
