NADIA HERNÁNDEZ
Con la punta de los dedos (With the tips of your fingers)
24 April – 22 May 2021
STATION | SYDNEY
Nadia Hernández’s practice is informed by the political climate of her home country and her diasporic experience as a Venezuelan woman. Through textiles, paper constructions, paintings, music, installations, sculptures and murals she negotiates complex political narratives – intersecting the personal and the institutional.
Positioning herself both within and outside of the Venezuelan diaspora, Hernández makes art as a means to connect with a country once hers, now seized and overcome by tyranny. Hernández builds upon the stories, vignettes and hidden histories of her country to cast a gaze over a Venezuela that is at risk of being forgotten.
Con la punta de los dedos explores memory and time from a non-linear perspective. The works remix time and culture, capturing current events taking place in Venezuela and intertwining them with cotidianidad (everydayness) as experienced by the artist and her family in diaspora. Poetry is derived from the Hernández’s mum’s recipes and the internal filing system of memories of her childhood home.
The title, which translates to ‘with the tips of your fingers’, makes reference to instructions from a family recipe that has been passed onto the artist by her mother.
“Aplanar con la punta de los dedos humedecidos hasta que quede como una panqueca. Cocinar hasta que acaramele.”
(Flatten with the moistened tips of your fingers until like a pancake. Cook until caramelised.)
— excerpt from a recipe by Delia Hernández
Constructing an interface between the traumas of loss and the desire to remember, Hernández creates art in search of home that transcends psychic and geographic boundaries.
