MICHAEL STANIAK
BASE REALITY
2 September – 30 September 2023

STATION | MELBOURNE

STATION is delighted to announce Michael Staniak’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Using traditional methods and contemporary tools, Staniak explores the shifts in our relationship with physical materials and ever evolving field of the creative process in light of the proliferation of new technologies.

In a new suite of sculptures made from recycled Oregon timber, Staniak examines the organic traits of the wood, highlighted by its unusually pronounced texture and grain. In BASE REALITY, the artist employs modern carving tools, traditional Japanese scorching techniques and his signature method of applying atomised paint to undulating surfaces. His unique forms circumvent their obvious organic origins and disrupt our perception of the natural versus the unnatural. The result is a captivating visual interrogation into the fine line between physical and virtual realities.
