ISADORA VAUGHAN
Residues
7 May – 11 June 2022

STATION | SYDNEY

Residues continues Vaughan’s process-based exploration of the properties of materials and their capacity to suggest meaning beyond themselves – poetic, political, organic or otherwise.

Residues is informed by the artist’s daily practice of walking at the meeting place of two creeks on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung land where she lives and works. Acknowledging the inability to recreate a representation of place, the sculptural works in this exhibition are fragments of Vaughan’s experiences of place and her relationship to the site. Traces of this environment are evident in the clay panels embedded with impressions of fallen trees, small plastic tree branches made from pieces of collected pipes, and bronze castings of acacia seed pods found near the creek. There is a deliberate ugliness in Vaughan’s material outcomes, a rawness that is intentionally confounding, but also beautiful.

Vaughan’s immersive environments and discreet stand-alone sculptural works are characterised by tensions between materiality and form, and often bring together readymade and industrial objects with organic matter. Oscillating somewhere between the formal and the alchemical, and employing a process of speculative questioning that draws from geology, craftsmanship and science, Isadora’s works encourage audiences to reflect on and foster a sense of connection with the natural environment.
