STATION | SYDNEY

STATION is delighted to present Between Ground and Horizon, a group exhibition exploring the tension and interplay between rootedness and expansion, ground and horizon, in contemporary painting and drawing practices at STATION Gadigal/Sydney. The exhibition features works by STATION represented artists Dean Cross and Jahnne Pasco-White alongside guest artist Brian Martin and the late Rosalie Gascoigne.

''Throughout the history of western landscape painting, the horizon line has often been deployed as a compositional device, a vanishing point that creates the illusion of perspective and three dimensional space in the pursuit of representation.

Marking the furthermost limit of our vision, the horizon is seemingly straightforward – a distant point where ground meets sky. We use the word figuratively to describe the boundary of knowledge or experience. Yet in truth, it does not exist at all. It is an apparition. Sometimes writing about visual practice can feel the same.

Between Ground and Horizon brings together the work of four artists who engage with land, with Country, and with notions of landscape – personal, (art) historical, temporal and cultural. What unites them is a deep fascination with materiality; recurrence of layering, patterning and markmaking; and processes of reciprocity through which materials sourced from the landscape are used in works that reflect back on or evoke their source.'' – Talia Linz
