STATION | MELBOURNE

STATION is delighted to present Adam Lee's eighth solo exhibition with the gallery, ʘJʘ.

ʘJʘ is a new body of paintings and large-scale watercolours that derives its title from the Spanish word carrying several meanings; literally translating as “eye”, it is also used colloquially in various cultures as a warning, meaning “watch out”. It takes its origins in the old Latin word Oculus, but is often also used in association with the idea of the Evil Eye. In this body of work, the idea of ʘJʘ becomes a kind of symbol for seeing and watching; that of our capacity (or at times our incapacity) to recognise the flow of time in relation to the vastness of human history, as well as that of the natural world around us and our relationship to it. But also the sense that this seeing might be turned around, with the world watching us, whereby ʘJʘ acts as a potential warning of impending threat of disaster on the horizon.
